Throughout his illustrious career it has never been doubted that Johnny Depp is a gifted actor. He has always proven himself more than capable from his days on the hit 80’s TV series “21 Jump Street” (yes the same one that has been turned into a respectable comedy franchise starring Channing Tatum & Jonah Hill) to his dramatic early turns in films such as “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” (which also features an early Oscars worthy performance by Leonardo DiCaprio) and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” to his frequent collaborations with director Tim Button.
As of late though his reputation as a thespian has been tarnished by some bad film choice. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” may have made him a household name but its subsequent convulated sequels soon brought the ire of old fans. Other poor choices including his role in director Kevin Smith’s “Tusk” and this year disastrous “Mordecai” threathened to be the final nails in his coffin.
Fortunately, Depp and his fans have “Black Mass” to look forward to. Even the naysayers will be compelled to make an about turn after witnessing his turn as Boston criminal turned informant Whitey Bulger. Even if the end product does not live up to the hype I strongly feel Johnny Depp’s performance will be revered.
