“Casino Royale” may have been the official reboot Ian Fleming’s ever popular James Bond series got on the big screen but to me “Skyfall” is truly the reboot fans (both die hards and casuals) always wanted.
Deemed out-of-style by youth who wanted to either a more realistic take on the spy genre (e.g. Matt Damon & Paul Greengrass Jason Bourne series) or the exact opposite (anyone remembers Xander Cage outrunning an avalanche?), Agent 007 faced the threat of extinction. To make matters worse Pierce Brosnan’s swan song as the dapper British spy in 2002’s “Die Another Die” was much maligned by both critics and fans.
Trying to keep up with the times long time series producers the Broccoli’s tried to infuse some realism in Daniel Craigs take on MI6’s best agent. Critics applauded and looking at the box-office figures so did audiences worldwide. Personally, I didn’t fancy it all that much.
What is James Bond without the gadgets, his womanizing ways, catchphrase or sexy sports car? Just another spy. Nobody is looking for another outing like Roger Moore’s late run as the legendary spy in the late 80’s but these are hallmarks of the character I, and many others, have grown accustomed to.
Fortunately, the people behind-the-scenes must have realised this after the hastily put together “Quantum of Solace” in 2008. Many of the fan favourite elements made their way in Bond’s last adventure 2012’s “Skyfall”. The Sam Mendes directed thriller also cleverly retconned elements such as a new M (played by Ralph Fiennes) and Miss Moneypenny (Naomie Harris the first woman of colour to play the part).
Upcoming 2015 James Bond movie “Spectre” looks to complete the reboot by introducing the criminal organization Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion aka S.P.E.C.T.R.E.. Does Christoph Waltz play Bonds arch-nemesis Blofeld? He doesn’t spot the signature elements of the character but this being a reboot anything is possible.
Daniel Craig’s next outing as MI6 British superspy James Bond Agent 007 will be released in Malaysia and Singapore on the 6th of November 2015.
