What do Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake and now Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie share in common? Give up?
They all starred in the same repackaged romantic comedy about commitment phobic people.
2011 saw the release of not one but two romantic comedies revolving around the scenario of “friends with benefits”. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term it’s Urban Dictionary describes it as the following:
Two friends who have a sexual realtionship without being emotionally involved. Typically two good friends who have casual sex without a monogomous relationship or any kind of commitment
Both “No Strings Attached” (Portman, Kutcher) and “Friends with Benefits” (Kunis, Timberlake) used this as the basis for their romance. Neither did all that well at the box-office with Ivan Reitman directed “No Strings Attached” earning US$149 million on a US$25 budget and the appropriately titled “Friends with Benefits” doing US$149.5 million on a US$35 million budget. Having not watched either I can’t judge them on their quality but they stand at 48% and 70% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.
You’d think 2 movies on the same topic in the same year would suffice but with Hollywood 2 is never enough. This year we have yet another comedy revolving around that topic. “Sleeping with Other People” might take a more indie approach but it’s essentially the same story.
Maybe it can be argued that my logic isn’t sound. Does every story about good guys versus bad guys make it the same. No, but if they involved very similar plot details (e.g. an asteroid on a collision course with earth) I’d probably not be interested in the 3rd movie on the subject.
Perhaps you’d be more kind.

Can two serial cheaters get a second chance at love? After a one-night stand in college, New Yorkers Lainey (Alison Brie) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis) meet by chance twelve years later and discover they each have the same problem: because of their monogamy-challenged ways, neither can maintain a relationship. Determined to stay friends despite their mutual attraction, they make a pact to keep it platonic, a deal that proves easier said than done. Fresh, funny, and full of witty insights about modern love, this hilariously heartfelt film “is the rare rom-com that reminds us why we love them so much in the first place” (Time Out New York). Amanda Peet, Adam Scott, Natasha Lyonne, and Jason Mantzoukas co-star.
