Coming Soon There have been a slew of movies which try to reinvent fairy tales, old (public domain) classics or tell stories set in an alternate reality. This was all exciting when I was in my early teens and writers in both comics and books attempted such genre bending works. Allan Moore, probably my favorite writer, alone has several works which use classic fables as a jumping off point such as “The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen” and “Lost Girls”.
Studios have also gotten in on this but found little to no success. From Timur Bekmambetov’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” to the reimagining of Hansel and Gretel as witchhunters in (what else) “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters” you’d think Hollywood has attempted it all. You were wrong.
Normally I’d brush off such lazy attempts at revisiting old done-to-death stories. What could they possibly offer? Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe appears to play a handsome Igor missing his trademark hunch. I bet you somewhere along the crazy experiments something terrible happens that disfigures him. So why am I not willing to dismiss this as quickly?
Yes, the young screenwriter and son of filmmaker John Landis doesn’t have a many produced works. His first major production “Chronicles” was essentially a somewhat new twist on the superhero genre and more importantly a success. Not just financially, which it was, but critically. Since then he’s developed an identity, at least online, as someone who gets genre work. Attracting talents such as James McAvoy only helps affirms my belief.
Of course filmmaking is not dependant on a single being. Lets see if they can pull off this revisionists version of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein.
