Sultan EID 2016 Bollywood movie trailer Salman Khan Anushka Sharma

Is Salman Khan’s Sultan a desi take on Sly’s Rocky?

Movie Trailer Cast & Crew Information Asia Release Date Plot Summary

Sports stories on celluloid usually don’t have room to do too much. Outside of a select few most choose to take the tried and tested route of relying on the “underdog” formula. Sylvester Stallone’s make-or-break attempt “Rocky” may have been the first bonafide success story to rely on this storytelling trope and make it a staple of popular cinema. Now every sports related movie walks in the shadows of that behemoth.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s 2016 Eid release “Sultan” may also find itself indebted to its Hollywood counterpart. Check out the first full length trailer for “Sultan” below.

Amazeballs!

Look I’m a sucker for such movies. Eventhough I’ve never fancied sports a tale of the human spirit overcoming Herculean obstacles always gets my heart pounding.

What starts off as a routine cookie cutter romance revolving around the life of a wrestler really takes a turn midway. Was not expecting that.

Khan, over the course of his recent resurgence as a box-office juggernaut, has developed a die hard following with his larger-than-life characters. Possibly realising that he can’t remain a one trick pony, he tried and succeeded in evolving as an actor with last year’s “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”. That evolution appears to continue in his forthcoming Eid release “Sultan”.

Khan playing a down-and-out wrestler given a chance at redemption has all the hallmarks of a classic sports tale. Bollywood has long plagiarised its Western counterpart but this comes off as more of a homage. There’s the training montage (did I spot a grey sweatshirt?) and the dialogue towards the end of the trailer is reminiscent of Rocky’s own “Life ain’t all sunshine and rainbows…” speech.

What better way for a fan to pay tribute then with a localised take on a legendary story? Definitely looking forward to this.

Yash Raj Film’s Salman Khan-Anushka Sharma starrer “Sultan” opens on the 6th of July 2016 in India and the rest of Asia including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
